EQUESTRIAN DERBY
:: August 1st, at 1:30 PM

The carriage racing derbies are quite young. They first started at the Carnaval de Québec seven years ago. The derbies are both timed races and handiness tests. The competitors have to follow a course marked off by cones numbered with a red flag from 1 to 12 (min) and up to 20 (max). The numbers should always be on the participants’ right side throughout the race. In the course, there are also 2 chance zones where the cones are identified by letters from A to E that the competitors have to pass alphabetically, always keeping the letters on their ride side. Let us not forget to mention that the leaders have to be accompanied by a navigator at the back of their carriage.

The Association des derbys d’attelage du Québec (The Carriage Racing Derbies of Quebec Association) (ADAQ) was recently formed to bring together the Quebec derbies fans. The association represents the leaders, structures the holding of the races (points, regulations, etc.), sees that the judges undergo a proper training and promotes carriage derbies in a broad way.
